Black Hair Care

The first part of the event is a moderated discussion on texturism, a form of discrimination that primarily affects people of African descent. The second half will be led by a local, professional hairstylist and a student who will teach participants how to protect and style various types of Black hair. This will be a hands-on activity with student volunteers that participants can practice on. This is important because of the lack of hair care options available for students in the Upper Valley.

To hold a space where Black women can come together and talk about their experiences at Dartmouth. A panel will share where they have found community and support throughout their time at Dartmouth.
To hold space where men and masculine identifying members of our community can come together and discuss issues related to their experiences both at Dartmouth and outside of Dartmouth.
Note: This event is specifically tailored to members of the Black and Pan-African community.

Black Queer Joy
Wednesday, February 8th, 2023 Triangle House (Tri-Ho)
Join us at Triangle House on Wednesday, February 8th at 5:30 pm for a workshop with Vanessa Miller as part of Black Legacy Month.
Vanessa B. Miller, LMSW will lead a 1.5-2 hour creative wellness workshop where participants will create their own wire wrapped jewelry and discuss themes around Black Joy. Vanessa is a licensed clinician working with LGBTQ communities and celebrated metalsmith at BQMNY.
This is an affinity space for students of color, centering Black and LGBTQIA+ experiences. The event space is wheelchair accessible and has single, gender neutral bathrooms. If you RSVP and cannot attend or have any questions, please email angelique@dartmouth.edu.

As Black students at a small and predominantly white institution, it can be difficult to find ways to uplift our spirits in a way that also strengthens the bonds between each other. This is especially true in the winter when the sun sets much earlier, it is typically too cold to spend substantial time outside, and seasonal depression takes hold. This Black Joy Fellowship event would provide a space for Black students to come together and enjoy being in each other's presence while engaging in activities and conversations surrounding Black Joy, thus improving students' moods.

Join us at Triangle House on Friday, February 17th from 5:30-6:30pm for a dinner with visiting artist Darryl DeAngelo Terrell as part of Black Legacy Month.
We will have a communal meal with some facilitated discussion with Associate Curator of Photography Alisa Swindell (she/they). This event is open to all students, but space is limited. If you RSVP but cannot attend, please let us know by emailing Ange at angelique@dartmouth.edu so others can be offered the space.
About the artist: Darryl DeAngelo Terrell (they/them) primarily works within lens-based media, performance, and writing. From Detroit, they are also a Curator, DJ, Organizer, and Educator. They work under the philosophy of F.U.B.U (This Shit Is For Us*) and are always thinking about how their work can aid to a larger conversation about blackness, and its many intersectionalities. Their work explores the displacement of black and brown people, femme identity, and strength, the black family structure, sexuality, gender, safe spaces for all black bodies, and personal stories, all while keeping in mind the accessibility of art.

The main components of this event include a Brunch (1st half), and fashion show (second half) which will take place simultaneously. Catering for this event will be provided by Maple Street. This event entails a keynote speaker who fits within the theme of Black joy--this year's keynote speaker is DeWanda Wise.
Wise made her blockbuster debut this Summer starring as Kayla Watts in "Jurassic World Dominion," followed by the highly anticipated Showtime adaptation of Lisa Taddeo's NY Times Bestseller "Three Women" coming 2023. Addition credits include her first leading role in ABC's "Firelight," her breakout role as Nola Darling in the Netflix adaption of "She's Gotta Have It," hit comedy "Someone Great" by Jenn Kaytin Robinson, and playing Swan opposite Kevin Hart in the Sony/Netflix film "Fatherhood" among others. Select stage credits include Atlantic Theater Company's "Fireflies," originating the roles of 'Nina' in Dominique Morisseau's "Sunset Baby," and 'Mercy' in "Flight," directed by Liesl Tommy, David Mamet's "Race," and "In the Continuum." An Ambassador for NAMI, DeWanda is committed to reducing mental health stigma, and systemic change towards accessible care for all.
